Reflection

At first, I did not know what this class would bring, but I thought it was going to be easy. This idea changed the first day when we went over the syllabus. I really did not understand what ENC 2135 was, I took the class because it was a requirement and I wanted to get it over with. People would tell me that summer classes were easy and did not require much work. But they were wrong, because it is the same amount of work in a shorter amount of time, and I realized this when Mat presented the syllabus and the expectations. When Mat presented the assignments they all seemed very daunting. I actually considered dropping the class, because I thought I would not be able to do those assignments in that short amount of a time. But I decided to keep the class and stick through it.

The first big assignment due was the personal narrative. For first project we had to pick a community that we would like to be a apart of and a community that we are already in. I chose to do the crochet community as the community I wanted to be a part of and the vegetarian community as the community I wanted to join. I was so sure on my topics because I knew that I would have a lot of research on these topics. When Mat explained what a personal narrative was, I was confused because I have never written a paper like that before. I was used to writing research papers instead of creative papers. I did not know where to start or even how to incorporate dialogue within the paper. It was very difficult writing the paper because I did not know what to talk about. I knew I wanted to talk about how I learned how to crochet from my aunt, but I did not know how to  convey my thoughts on paper. My whole plan changed when I went to my conference with Mat. Mat thought that I should change my community to a crochet club called “Crocheting for a Cause”. He suggested this because I mentioned them in my personal narrative and he wanted me to focus on one event instead of multiple. He also advised to add more detail and descriptions when mentioning people, so I could create a picture in the reader’s mind.

I thought the inquiry part of this project would be the easiest because I knew how to write research papers. But yet again, Mat broke it to me that this paper was not really a tradition research paper but an investigation on our community. The first part of project two was the interview. I decided to interview a friend of mine who is the founder of the club that I am researching. I took Mat’s advice on how to include details and descriptions on people. This was an easy interview to conduct because I was comfortable with the person I was interviewing.  The second part of project two was the community profile, and I honestly found this part the easiest because I knew a lot about the community from the interview. I made sure to ask questions that pertain to the community, so I would be able to write the community profile. The hardest parts of the of project 2 were the text analysis and the argument summary. I did not know how to write a text analysis, and I did not think I was going to be able to reach the word count. My overall concern for this second project was my ability to reach the word count, but I manage to make the minimum.

For me project three was the easiest project out of all of them because it did not require a lot writing. I knew what my genres were going to be from the beginning, so I had no issue finding genres. For project three I decided to do a Pinterest page, a post, and a survey.  I chose to do a Pinterest page because the it is known for DIY activities and inspirational. This social media platform would be the best fit, because many people in the crochet community already use crochet as a way to get ideas. On the site I posted pictures of crocheted hats and of the members. As I finished my project three, I looked back at the work I have done, and I can tell myself that I did a good job and it was not as bad as I thought.
